A community of residents of Kherson have marked the 244th birthday of their home city. The celebrations took place in the city of Odesa, in southern Ukraine, on September 17th.

The event gathered together about 50 people including couples with children. The participants met near Opera Theatre, a local popular sight in the city center, holding banners with birthday congratulations written on them.

“It is your day today, our Kherson, a heroic city!” the Kherson City Council said in its official note. “You will be definitely freed soon. Russian invaders will not walk along your streets, but happy children will run around happily. You will flourish under the Ukrainian flag!”

Kherson, a city of major strategic importance, was captured on March 3rd and is the only regional center under Russia’s control. The area around the city and the territory of the Kherson region are zones of active hostilities.

According to the UN, about 14 million Ukrainians have left their homes because of the Russian military invasion.
